In 2002, after much “complaining” about the extremely low morale of the Northlake Police Department and after hearing from the administration that it was only a “few veteran officers” that were starting trouble, we(the FOP Lodge #18) decided to have an employee survey taken. The survey was obtained from a major corporation and altered a bit to apply to a police agency. I highly recommend this survey to any police agency–if the administration will even consider doing a survey! A True Lesson Learned During My Probation
This is about my first real lesson learned while I was on probation at Northlake Police Department. Rookies take heed…Now, when an officer passes FTO and is set on their own it is very exciting and “freeing.” You are free to pursue criminals and respond to calls in your own style. Even though you may be on your own, much still rides on the other officers you work as well as supervisors. When I was a rookie, my FTO and a couple other fine and trustworthy officers advised me to find an officer or two that I trusted and only confide in them matters that could jeopardize my job/career. The Department spokeswoman obviously is trying to put a spin on things. A friend of mine who is a copper at Chicago PD has cnfirmed that morale is extremely low and they are not going to go out of their way to make arrests for fear that they will be overly scrutinized and eventually punished. Seems certain chiefs like to make a reputation for themselves. This happens everyday and I am sure some people actually buy into department brass’ excuses. An FTO story…When you are an FTO you come across some real characters when training rookie police officers. Many times you may find yourself asking, “How did this person get hired?” Whether it is because the person is a friend of a politician or is a suck up to the police chief it is a sad state of affairs when someone who clearly should be in another line of work gets hired as a police officer.With that in mind, I am reminded of someone who rode along with me. As we all know, arrestees that we know for certain are guilty get off or are found not guilty for whatever reason(s). That being said, it appears that Northlake Police’s version of Slick Willie, Dennis Koletsos, has been exonerated from a lawsuit once again. Without knowing all the facts, only he and Coary know all the exact facts, I can’t give an exact and appropriate opinion on the matter.
