Are controversial recommendations about officers in shootings really valid?

Provided by The Force Science Research Center How do you think an officer should be treated after he has shot and killed an offender: A. Like a suspect or a civilian witness–required to give a statement ASAP…isolated for fear he’ll collude with others to concoct a self-serving fairy tale of what happened…interrogated rather than interviewed, with every discrepancy and hole in his version of events regarded suspiciously as probable evidence of deceit? B. Like a survivor of a critical incident–given time to de-escalate and mentally process the high-stress encounter before being extensively questioned…allowed …Read more […..]

I Can Do It, My Mommie! Mini Waffles, Poppy

Today Emma turned 2. Where did the time go? Seems like yesterday she was not able to crawl or walk but was scooching around on her but–and boy could she scooch! She got a giant happy face balloon and a giant number 2 balloon. She loves her boons! And, the best was yet to come after dinner. The chocolate(Hatten) cupcakes with the white frosting were the perfect treat for a little princess. She made quite a mess.Whoever coined the term “terrible twos” knew what they were talking about. The little stinker is truly an independent thinker. She wants to do things by herself now and lets us know it by saying, “No, Emma.” Whether …Read more […..]

Easter Buddy, Hannon, Ki Ki, Octanon

Easter was a good day. Emma was a very good girl in church. She loves the music and listened intently as the choir sung. During the sermon she got friendly with the ladies next to us. She smiled and began showing them her “Mama” and her “Dada.” The 2 ladies became second fiddle when Emma noticed the younger looking woman next to them. She loves the younger looking women and teenage girls and gravitates to them wherever we are. She calls them “Lala” like she calls her cousin Lauren. She got down from Melissa’s lap and crept closer and closer to the woman. She received lots of smiles at church. After church Emma got to see the …Read more […..]

Does Filing Grievances Ruin a Career?

What is the function of the Union President/Steward of a Police Department? This person is responsible for acting as the liason between the Police Officers and Management as well as to ensure that labor contract violations are attended to. My experience at Northlake PD is one that may or may not be common in the Policing world, I leave that up to you. In my 18 months as Union President of Northlake PD I filed 18 grievances. Several of the grievances were my own but the overwhelming majority of them were filed on behalf of other officers with their permission and at their request. I felt that the labor contract was being …Read more […..]

Puppy! Mana, Shoes, Mall, Diaper Changing

This past weekend we went to Emma’s “new” relatives for an early Easter and a birthday party. Emma received big Easter baskets filled with goodies. She also got to play with the tiny little dog that was there! She loves puppies and this little dog was no exception. It is smaller than her cats and wags its tail extremely fast! The only thing that she didn’t get was that this little dog did not like her and wanted to bite her. She got a kick out of the fact that it tried to bite her cheek and her feet. Even 4 days later when I ask her what she did at the party she laughs and says “puppy, cheek(points at cheek), and feet(points …Read more […..]
