In a kind of chain reaction, a lawsuit against the city of Northlake has led the city to file a lawsuit of its own.

In January 2008, Daniel Rasic filed a lawsuit against the city of Northlake, Police Chief Dennis Koletsos and the Police and Fire Commission.

Rasic was hired as a police officer by the city in 1999.

He filed suit against the city in 2008, claiming the city had fired him for taking family and medical leave in 2007. The leave is a federally approved act.

In April 2010, U.S. District Court Judge Sidney Schenkier ruled in Rasic’s favor. Rasic was awarded $174,000 in damages, $72,000 in front pay plus interest.

On Aug. 25, the city of Northlake, Koletsos and the Police and Fire Commission filed against Scottsdale Insurance Company in Cook County Circuit Court. The city claims that its policy requires Scottsdale Insurance to pay its loss in court.

Specifically, the city claims that its policy requires Scottsdale to pay up to $1 million for “employment practices wrongful acts” including ending employment.
